NASA Chooses Tempo Automation to Help Mars Rover Avoid Issues During Landing Blackouts
IPC Class 3 PCBs to refine the design process for the NASA Perseverance Rover

SAN FRANCISCO, December 3, 2020 — Tempo Automation, the world’s leading software- accelerated electronics manufacturer, today announced it has provided key support for NASA’s Mars Exploration Program by building PCBs for the Mars Rover 2020 Entry, Descent & Landing (EDL) Cameras. The NASA-funded Jet Propulsion Laboratory developed the cameras.  

The goal of the EDL capability upgrade camera system is to capture critical live video feed and detailed imagery during the “seven minutes of terror” period — the infamous tense moments before the final touchdown — before the Rover lands on Mars. This is the first time a landing on another planet will be captured with a live feed.  

Tempo was selected for the multiyear project because of its ability to build boards quickly and make adjustments in a timely manner. The electronics manufacturer also demonstrated adherence to IPC 510 Class 3 or J-STD-001 with Space Addendum standards. 

“Landing on Mars is a perilous process, and Tempo is pleased to contribute to the Mars Rover 2020 program to help JPL optimize its test prototype cycle,” said Joy Weiss, President and CEO at Tempo. “Our DFM engineers are committed to providing ample time for JPL to refine and successfully develop flight-level quality boards.”

The Mars 2020 Perseverance Rover mission follows the flight of the 2012 Mars Curiosity Rover. Perseverance will launch on July 30, 2020. Part of NASA’s Mars Exploration Program, the mission for Perseverance is to study the geology of Mars and search for signs of life.
