The PCB Assembly Process

Although PCB terminology may seem ambiguous, PCBA is separate from fabrication. This final stage of manufacturing is where components are soldered to the board and the board quality is verified. You should expect the PCBA manufacturing process of your contract manufacturer (CM) to exhibit five key attributes:

PCBA Validation

Developing key attributes for your PCBA manufacturing process starts with attaching components to the board free from common failure modes and validating the quality of the board build process. The latter requires your CM to perform sufficient inspections and tests to validate solder joint quality and PCB structural integrity.

For optimal yield rates, both manual and automated inspection should be included. Good quality control testing methods include AOI and ROSE. Your CM may offer optional functional in-circuit tests, such as Flying J and Bed of Nails, to facilitate advanced destructive physical analysis (DPA) often required for military and space applications.
