The foundation of hardware innovation is PCBA development. Although a cyclic procedure, creating complex circuit boards that drive technological advancement requires optimization of the three interdependent stages: Design-Build-Test (DBT). Essential to reaching this goal is integrating PCB fabrication—constructing the bare circuit board’s architecture—and supply chain management—securing sufficient quantities of needed components to sustain development and production—with PCB assembly (PCBA)—the final build process that completes the design, verifies your board’s structural integrity, and ensures its reliability for the intended application.

The PCB Assembly Process

Although PCB terminology may seem ambiguous, PCBA is separate from fabrication. This final stage of manufacturing is where components are soldered to the board and the board quality is verified. You should expect the PCBA manufacturing process of your contract manufacturer (CM) to exhibit five key attributes:

PCBA Validation

Developing key attributes for your PCBA manufacturing process starts with attaching components to the board free from common failure modes and validating the quality of the board build process. The latter requires your CM to perform sufficient inspections and tests to validate solder joint quality and PCB structural integrity.

For optimal yield rates, both manual and automated inspection should be included. Good quality control testing methods include AOI and ROSE. Your CM may offer optional functional in-circuit tests, such as Flying J and Bed of Nails, to facilitate advanced destructive physical analysis (DPA) often required for military and space applications.

Tempo’s Advanced Integrated Turnkey PCBA Manufacturing

Aside from quality, the greatest asset for innovative PCBA development is speed. The need to learn makes the ability to iterate and fail faster crucial for custom new product development and introduction (NPI). Tempo Automation has developed an integrated PCBA manufacturing process to optimize NPI, allowing engineers to design at the speed of innovation.

By eliminating the need for strict separation between board fabrication, component procurement, and assembly, Tempo has created a new integrated paradigm that greatly improves the iteration speed of PCBA manufacturing and reduces the time required to achieve the highest quality design embodiment. As a result of this smarter process, customers realize significant efficiency gains. By partnering with Tempo early on during the initial design process, the smooth transition to fabrication, component sourcing, prototyping, and iteration ultimately allow our customers to get to market more quickly.
